On the beat

Today, in my orchestra, I was one of the 2 instruments that starts first. The conductor raised his hands, but while I was waiting for the preparatory beats, I blinked. When I opened my eyes, the conductor had already started. I started late, in front of a thousand people. The conductor is still angry with me. FML

Blinking doesn't last long enough to miss an entrance cue, especially at the start of a piece because the conductor will generally give several beats... You just weren't paying attention. Speaking as a professional musician here...

He should be -- you humiliated him. He chose you for the lead-in and you failed. Maybe you'll lose your place as a starter and be demoted to the second string.

There's a big difference between blinking and closing your eyes. If you'd been blinking you wouldn't have missed your cue. You closed your eyes. ydi

That must have been one hell of a blink.
