i think that the had a job posting online or something for the said job. and op saw it, while looking for another job. op applied for it not knowing hes already working it. basically company was looking for a replacement

I think it's more like OP's department got outsourced to a consulting firm, and while he was training his replacements before getting laid off, consulting firm realized that their H1Bs not gonna get it in time, so they started to hire people who they were going to replace. At least that's what happened to us.
