Paranoid parents

Today, I was yelled at and called a pedophile by a mom for talking to her 5 year-old girl. I work at a library, and she looked like she needed help. This is the third time it's happened. FML

On behalf of Moms with young kids I apologize OP. There is no excise for saying such a horrible thing to someone for doing their job. Make sure you wear a visible name tag so the kids know you work there. If a Mom says such a thing to you again I'd make it clear you will not be verbally abused

Overprotective much? FYL… sometimes parents are just too narrowminded and think every stranger is a pedophile… honestly, how does one make new friends if you can't talk to strangers?

Do you have to wear a name tag or uniform? If not, if you're going around looking like a regular dude talking to young children, I can see how you would be mistaken for a pedo. If you were properly identified as an employee, that shouldn't happen. Unless straight up bitches just love coming to your library, in which case, FYL

Even if OP WASN'T wearing a name tag he shouldn't have to deal with such verbal abuse. The mum should assess the situation before making such horrible accusations.

Am I the only one who is getting seriously tired of this? Why does any male paying kind attention to a little girl (or boy) suddenly qualify him as a pedophile? When a woman does this, she's not usually seen as a sex predator, this is just demonization. People shouldn't overreact like that.

You are not the only one who is fed up with this crap. It has not happened yet, but if it does, I will tear the person's ass wide open if they call me a pedophile for simply talking to their child. people are battering others because they are talking to their kids and this shit has got to stop. If people are so terrified their kids are going to be molested maybe they should not let the child out of their sight EVER and eventually the child will hate them for it or just not have kids.

I guarantee this'll get shit on. But this is an example of sexism. Attitudes that only affect men. Especially poignant because strangers account for such a low percentage of child abuse.

a manager from the Philippines at my old work place had a problem similar to this. We were in charge of customer service and she was speaking to a little girl and the mother told my manager off. Came as a bit of a culture shock to her because in the Philippines it is customary for the community to take part in looking after children.
