There's a reason why you're not supposed to brake for or swerve out of the way of animals. Sure, killing an animal is tragic, but killing a human isn't worth saving a turtle/squirrel/deer/etc. If you're aware of your surroundings and you KNOW nobody's behind you, brake. But you're asking for trouble by swerving, especially if you combine that with slamming on the brakes.

why didnt you just stop? its not like the turtle darted out in front of you...
