When I turned 12, in 1974, we lived over seas and the only party people were the 20 or so adults that lived in our "compound". I had recently started my period, and had also asked if we could shave my legs for the first time too. When it came time for cake my mom stood and said Happy birthday and congratulations on becoming a woman. Then she proceeded to tell the group the exciting developments in my life. I spent the rest of the time saying thank you as men and women both came to say how happy they were for me. FML
