This for me is a tough subject. Yes, I believe dogs should be in the backseat. Will I buckle my dog in? No. I have 2 dogs that ride just fine without it. But we've got people saying not to put your dog on a chain... yet a seatbelt is ok? So what happens when, say, you do get in a wreck. The dog lives, but cannot get out of the vehicle without being unbuckled. So if my car starts to catch fire, my dog must burn alive? I think not. I would rather live life knowing my dog did not suffer than know that a seatbelt made it have to suffer more.
This is exactly the same argument that people used for why they didn't wear seat belts. Think of this. If your car catches fire, unless you've taught your dog to roll down the window or unlock the door. It's going to burn anyway. You're in the car with the dog. You can unbuckle the dog the same way you would unbuckle a restrained child. I know you're not advocating leaving a child unbuckled in the car because you're worried that they might burn to death in an accident.
So you don't wear your seatbelt right? Because if your car catches on fire and you can't unbuckle it you will burn alive. There is a reason why seatbelts are obligated, regardless of the possibility to get trapped by a seatbelt. Namely that without a seatbelt, your chances at survival are so minimal that it doesn't matter that you might get trapped in the car because of the seatbelt, you will probably be death anyway.
I really don't understand why this got thumbed down. I know how it is to drive in a car with both dogs and cats. I was practically living out of my car with them at one point. My dogs are extremely well behaved, sit/lay in the back, and have never nor will ever be harnessed in. I can understand it with hyper dogs or while training them, but if you trust your dog and don't drive like an idiot (which from the sounds of it, many of you do) then there won't be a problem. 10+ years of driving experience and never once been in an accident nor gotten a ticket.
Thank you. My first instinct upon a dog getting into my lap whilst driving? Pull over and then deal with it. And my point apparently came out wrong. Of which was, if I am getting in a wreck to do enough damage to hurt or kill me or my dog, windows are broken. The dog could then climb out. I am going to be worrying about me, so my last instinct in that case would not be to unharness my dog, but myself.
#83, your unrestrained dog becomes a flying object in a crash. A flying object that can hurt you/other passengers, even decapitate you/them. Not to mention be hurt or killed because the dog flew into something. Even if the dog survives, with a broken window, dogs are known to run out of crashed cars due to fear, which can get them hit by another vehicle or injured in some other way or lost. There is no reason not to restrain your dog in a car (sticking its head out the window is dangerous), but so many reasons to restrain your dog. You love your dog and want it to be happy and healthy, right?
#80, the best drivers can get in crashes at the fault of bad drivers, drunk drivers, someone (best driver or another driver) having a sudden medical crisis like a heart attack at the wheel, momentary distractions, tiredness, a mistake, malfunctioning vehicle, etc. Being a good driver doesn't prevent you from being in a crash.
I was in an accident and the person who hit me had two dogs in the car. He hit the side of my van (I slid into he other lane because of the snow, so it was my fault) and his dog's face slammed into the dashboard and needed stitches. He x-rayed his other dog and said it might need a $10,000 surgery to fix a slight back fracture (or it was something like that). We had to pay for the dog that was actually injured. I would've had to drop out of college for my family to pay that off. Riding with animals in the car is dumb. Unless you have to have them in there, you're just asking for trouble. You need to focus on the road and in an accident there is really no way to keep an animal safe if it isn't in a cage. This is something that will teach you a lesson before you actually hurt someone.
haha man that sucks. My dog is just like that except, thank god, he does it when the car's not in motion. They just want to be up close and personal all the time. They have no concept of "there's a time and a place for everything"
So, like an idiot, you continue not to restrain your animal?
You're supposed to have your dog in the back, or at least in the back seat with a leash that fastens in the seatbelt lock. Driving with your dog insecured in the front seat can be very dangerous, both for you and the dog. All pet stores are supposed to carry this leash, I suggest you try and find one. If they don't have the product in shop, it's very easy (and inexpensive) to find online. Be safe!
Just to clarify what I am sure this poster meant, you need to buy a car safety harness, not a leash, and you should never use a leash attached to a dog's neck collar for restraining it in the car. Also, look for a tested vehicle safety harness, not just a vehicle restraint harness, which may not be strong enough to fare a crash.
Good thing is ; no one was hurt. Except for your wallet.
That's why you buy your dog a seat belt or harness. It keeps everyone safe.
Riight. Because there was nothing reckless about the situation. You should be lucky you didn't hit a kid.
Pets must either be secured or left @ home...here's the proof: a friend's sister took her dog with her (just like you)..her dog somehow managed to get part of itself under her e-brake..the e-brake caused the car to skid & then roll...the dog died as it went through the windshield, her car was totaled & she ended up in the ICU @ the hospital (she was unconscious for 3 hrs in a ditch upside down before she was found)..so YDI in my opinion.

Your dog was riding the seat? Why wasn't he riding IN the seat? No wonder you got distracted.
Dogs these days are barking mad.
