Show off

Today, I had a test in orchestra class, which I'd practiced over 30 hours for. After I played my part, which I thought I did very well, my teacher asked how long I'd practiced. Trying to show off, I said, "Oh, just 30 minutes." My teacher said, "It shows; that was terrible." She was serious. FML

i guess pracriced is the new word for terrible practice

If you told your teacher how long you really practiced, it may have impressed her that you worked so hard. But, no, you didn't.

I do not think the original poster deserved that. I think that is very mean. :( *hugs*

don't try to show off by saying you only practiced for 30 minutes. It won't work and and just tells them that you didn't put in effort. also, they probably have much more experience than you, so you can't impress them

You're not supposed to say that you spent less time practicing. I play the piano and play maybe 2 hours a week, but would never admit that to my teacher. I do fairly well anyway.

@#48 Amen. One of my best friends is a trumpet player, and she is the most down to earth, amazing person I know. People need to stop bashing trumpets because they feel insecure about their own playing abilities. Also, OP. If you practiced that long and still had problems, reassess how you deal with nerves in a situation like that, and rethink your practicing strategy. Smashing out notes and rhythms over and over doesn't help your musicality develop at all. Another harsh reality of life in the music world: effort rarely counts when you're performing for a playing test, audition, or concert. Worry about polishing the finished product, not how much you practice so you can brag to friends.

First off, practicing too much can turn you deaf to your own mistakes and that can cause you to add more mistakes, leaving a general chaos of well, mistakes. Secondly, don't tell her you practiced for 30hrs, nor for 30mins. Tell her a reasonable number, like maybe 3hrs. If you tell her a number that is too low, she thinks you aren't being serious about it. Even if it was good she probably got pissed off at that and just told you it was crap. If you tell her 30 hours and she'll wonder how you did so bad with 30 hours of practice.

You're a dumbass for telling your teacher you only practiced 30 minutes. That's what you get for trying to show off. You should've just told her the truth. If you'd been honest, maybe she would've been more helpful than just telling you how much you suck. You've dug your hole now though bc if you tell her you were just trying to show off and you really practiced 30 hours, she won't believe you. Way to go, idiot. YDI.

Practice... practice... HOW DARE YOU UTTER THE P-WORD?!

#8: you'd be surprised. I mean, you know, there are these things called PROFESSIONAL ORCHESTRAS. #33: the whole post was about how s/he DIDN'T do 30 minutes, but over 30 HOURS. #43: I agree that if this wasn't professional or some big youth orchestra, s/he shouldn't have spent THAT much time practicing for a playing test. #48: wow talk about insensitivity and ignorance. If you're a professional musician, you should realize just how hard it is out there for string players, especially violinists, simply because of the vast COMPETITION. Maybe the school you went to wasn't very good, or it wasn't strong for strings. On top of that, how do you know that s/he is a string player? S/he didn't state his/her gender. I also agree with pretty much everyone else about how saying "oh, only 30 minutes" was not the smartest thing to do. Also, people, 30 hours may not be that much if over a period of time. Think of it this way: if the playing test music or w/e was announced/handed out in advance, say 2-3 weeks, then if s/he had practiced a few hours every day it'd easily reach over 30 hours.

i think you're exaggerating if you're saying practiced for 30 hours? And still sound terrible? Man....it's time to think if you enjoy playing. People can get a lot done in 30 min, some can get 2 hours work done in 30 min it depends on practicing habits, and good technique while practicing.... but that's like years and years of practicing in good habit, and if you don't practice everyday, then you'll never get there or just not have the motivation to practice.

wait you actually practiced for orchestra??? y would you do that? if it takes more than 10 minutes a week to get sumthin down or less...orchestra is not for u...atleast if ur in middle school or any high school orchestra besides the top one...so wow.
