So hot

Today, the AC broke in the kitchen of the restaurant I work at. Temperatures reached over 100 degrees and one of my coworkers nearly passed out. Our boss accused us of being "dramatic" and only let us step out after I collapsed. I need this job too badly to quit. FML

Hope it's fixed soon :( regulated kitchens are bad enough! But even if it is fixed soon you should still look for another job because your employer just showed that he doesn't respect you guys or think of your well being

Assuming it's a chain restaurant, file a complaint to someone higher up than your boss. Whether it be about your boss' behavior or just asking for the AC to be fixed, no one should have to work under those conditions. Best of luck OP.

Yeah seriously! Kitchens can get to being really hot, even with the AC on full blast. That sounds intense. I live in Arizona where temperatures often reach 110° over the summer and I might have passed out from OP's conditions even after being used to such heat.

my boss actually has us go stand in the walk in freezer when we overheat, and we had to close down twice over the summer because we had no A/C. Ah, Arizona

It's possible this was an isolated incident and just a bad call on the boss's part. That doesn't excuse it, but people do make mistakes. It's also possible (and more likely, given tone of the FML) that the boss (or restaurant) is consistently negligent about work place health/safety. If that's the case, OP and his coworkers should document this and definitely talk to the boss's boss, the labor board, or OSHA.

lock him in the kitchen for a few hours and when he says he's too hot tell him he's being too dramatic. best option is to cook him alive.

That's extremely unfortunate. Is there some sort of law to protect against this type of.. neglect (for lack of a better word)? Excuse my ignorance on the matter, I'm not sure how all of the laws work in each state pertaining to work.

There really isn't much of a law that can help them due to the fact that it was a mechanical failure. As long as they get it fixed in a timely manner they're doing their due diligence. It still definitely sucks though. Sorry OP

Take pictures of the thermostat, send them to hr or OSHA. If there's no response I would go to the media about it. Unsafe working environment. That's not fair at all.
