Pretty sure you can sue for that. I'd also quickly call the other job back and tell them you'll take it after all. If that doesn't work, definitely a huge FYL.
Sorry but YDI for not getting the offer to stay in writing.
I'm a boss - call the first employer back ASAP - what I do is even after an offer I make to a potential employee is turned down by the potential candidate , I make no decisions for at least 48 hours because I have had people call back telling me they regretted turning down an offer . I know I have done the same thing when I was employed by others.
