He doesn't know how to express himself better. Not every guy is keen with emotions, so the way they respond to someone else's dilemma will seem...rude.

OP I hope your cousin pulls through. Now to everyone saying "so what he got bored and started playing" if you're comforting someone you care about you shouldn't be bored your mind should be focused on them. And even if it doesn't, you should care enough about them to at least pretend they're the only thing on your mind. Whether he knew the cousin or not is irrelevant, it's that it's something that is upsetting his girl so he should care for her.

this is probably a coping mechanism for him. hes probably distressed that his gf was distressed and after she stopped crying attempted to clear his mind.
