he must now have grand-children
Don't ID an elderly man even as a joke. He obviously doesn't need to waste the time pulling one out.
Sweet? Sounds annoying
What a lot of people don't realize is that a lot of stores and restaurants that sell alcohol have a policy to ID everybody, regardless of their age. There are actually cops and other people who go undercover and try to buy drinks at places without showing their IDs. And that's how you lose your license to sell. So keep up the good work OP, you did the right thing.
FYL. I'm going to assume most of the people saying YDI and that cashiers shouldn't ask for elderly customer's IDs don't have much, if any, experience working in retail. Cashiers are encouraged to be friendly with customers, and there are quite a few customers who look old enough and will jokingly say things like "What, don't I get ID'd?" especially if they're in line behind a younger customer who did get asked. It's not OP's fault that one old man decided he'd rather be crotchety instead of shrugging it off.
Don't mess with old people.
There's nothing sweet about ID-ing the elderly I think... Grey hair is their ID

Some people just need to learn to take compliments once in a while...
I think you'd get a better result if you did that to an old lady
