This is going to be one long month

Today, I was assigned to fill in for a French teacher who was out sick. I had asked the class to name some French-speaking countries. I called on one girl and she replied, "Uh, Europe. That's, like, the only other one, right?" Nobody disagreed. I'm filling in for the rest of the month. FML

Just play finding Nemo in French with English subtitles for them. Thats what my french sub teachers did.

Sounds like you have your work cutout for you.

You have a month to do something meaningful with a group of students thrown in a bad education system, sounds like an awesome opportunity

sounds like my french class... but, I have a fantastic teacher. learn all you can about the francophone world and educate them! not many students are forced to think or struggle. struggling is a part of the learning process that no young people want to deal with. they're missing out, so do what you can OP!

from what i learned in History class, is that people speak french in Canada too

I'm surprised no one pointed out that Europe is not a country yet.

It was pointed out, but it was thumbed down

Funny thing is, some people wonder why the US education system gets mocked by other countries. Then we have examples like this. At least now you have the chance to do something meaningful, which presumably is why you became a teacher in the first place. Good luck OP.

Silly #55, people become veterinarians because they love children! ...Right? ...'Cause I'm a blonde (yeah, yeah yeah!)... *Rushes out the door*

En effet, l'Union Européenne est le seul autre pays que je connaisse où le français est parlé. Le français ne va d'ailleurs pas tarder à se faire appeler l'européen, vu que l'UE est beaucoup plus grande.

Again, Europe is not a country. And they speak french in Africa (for example Tunisia). Maybe you should need some more education too..

Try giving them candy, it really works. Ask a question, and when you get a good answer, you toss a piece of candy to them. Make it a regular thing and the students will want to raise their hand more to answer. Because chances are, there's a few students in that class who are NOT complete idiots, but are just sitting there quietly facepalming and the stupidity of their classmates. I've been there before. The class was super easy but the teacher would NOT stop reviewing it like we were idiots because no one would answer when she asked a simple question. So she thought no one knew the answer, and I should have spoken up, but I was being bullied at the time and was pretty insecure. No way I'd raise my hand. But add candy to the equation and hands will pop up each time you ask something, just try it.

In a way she's right but I think they are going to give you a hard time for a bit...

Think again, continents are not countries. I am fairly certain you are one of OP's students, haha.
