Today, while I was working as a waitress, I had to wait on a table of 13 people. I was struggling through it and when they finally left I went by the table to pick up my tip. Instead of a money I got a napkin saying, "Here's your tip, don't be a waitress." FML

Your restaurant doesn't add gratuity for parties of 8 or more? Most do, and this is why.

If you have ever worked in the restaurant industry, you'd realize this is a FML. No one deserves to get stiffed on a tip, especially for a party of 13. But like #3, why wasn't there gratuity added in?

The fact someone went to those lengths as to make a joke like that gives me the vibe that it was more of a action of spite rather than being unsatisfied with the service although you could be telling half the story although it sounds realistic people are just that low down in the world

For those of you saying that tips should only be given for outstanding service, I agree...that is, if this were a better world I would agree. As things stand, this is a world in which it is now the standard for restaurants to lower their advertised prices by paying their waitstaff far less than minimum wage, made possible by requiring that they report their tips as income. A few years back, a friend of mine waited at a fairly fancy restaurant and her wages, so-called, were just above two dollars per hour. Her first paycheck was actually a negative amount, despite covering thirty hours of employment, due to the cost of uniforms and such. Every time you don't tip, at least in all the places in the US I've been, you're essentially making your waiter/waitress work for about a third (maybe half) of what any fast food employee would make. Which makes you an ass every time you did this without waiting for them to urinate in your lemonade or wipe buggers off into your roast beef or somesuch.

if the wage is that low they should get a different job. then people will have to start paying more. it's a stupid system, and has left people expecting to be rewarded even if they give the service that is expected of them as part of their job

I don't know why you think tips are "being rewarded". They are part of the waiter's wage. They are part of your food cost, but restaurateurs leave out that little detail because a) it gives them lower advertised prices and b) *they* are not the ones getting shafted.

Vipros, what country are you from? I'm just hoping you're not a Canadian like myself, since then you'd be giving us Canuks a bad name by being ignorant and rude. You might have a masters degree, but that doesn't mean anything if you can't get your head out of your ass and see that it is next to impossible to get another job, like you continuously tell these people. Many employers have signs that they are hiring, but in reality, the companies just require them to post signs regardless if they are hiring or not. Also, how many times must you be told that waitresses are paid much less than minimum wage because they are EXPECTED to get tips? Just because you think it's a stupid system, doesn't give you the right to be an asshole because companies aren't about to change it anytime soon in North America. Plus, a waiter/waitress could be doing the best job they can and "deserve" the "reward" (as you insist on calling it), but the customer could just be an ass and not tip. I have the feeling you're the type of person who goes into restaurants during dinner rushes and expect all attention to be paid to you because you think the world revolves around you since you have your masters. No I'm not a waitress; I'm a barista for Starbucks. I still deal with people like you on a daily basis, though I don't expect tips because I make more than minimum wage (thank you Sbux). I just know it's shitty to deal with large groups of people who are disrespectful, especially if you're having a bad day or there aren't many employees on the floor to help. So yes, the OP's life is ******.

actual money, not hourly wage, you make about $30 an hour. My wife was a waitress before she became a teacher a few years ago, said she'd make about $180 a night...but u people do know that TIPS is an acronym for To Insure Prompt Service, right? And you idiots honestly wanna try to argue that being a waitress is 4 times harder than working at fast food, which is just as busy and you do the same work? LOL. That's why a waiter doesn't deserve 4x the pay...and waiters deserve 3x the pay of a construction worker? Think about it..

How much money you make completely depends on where you work. I waitress at a small restaurant and only make about $20-$40 each night, plus $2.13/hr (minimum wage).

You might be able to make $30/hr in some upper class places, but that is far from the norm. Also, you're talking out your ass with the TIPS acronym, for two main reasons: 1) Tip in this sense derives from the 16th century form, where "tip" meant "to give" 2) "Insure" would *not* be the correct word to use, anyway. It would be "ensure". Finally, having both fast food and waiting, I can definitely tell you fast food is *way* easier.

With fast food, there is not a lot of thinking involved. I used to work in fast food before I started waiting, and I can tell you that waiting is WAY harder than ANY fast food job out there.

Perhaps your wife is the exception not the rule....

If they ever come back, you should tell the kitchen staff to mess with their food.

In Europe the tips are "earned" solely on having a good restaurant experience: right price, not having to wait more then 25 to 30 minutes, good and friendly staff, etc... so tips are not considered "normal" here and only happen very sporadically... however > the majority of waiters in restaurants work "under the table" (except in really fancy places) which means they CAN make a living of it more easily since they get cash every other week, but sometimes dont have benefits, insurance, healthcare plans or holidays the staff of caterers DO get tips easier here tho as far as I've experienced

In Europe, tips aren't required for the waiter to make minimum wage. This post says it was from Arizona, which means the waitstaff minimum wage is about half that of the general. A 13-top probably represented a sizable portion of her income for the night, so.... yeah.

Not to mention, your 25-30 minute thing is totally wrong. Most Europeans expect to spend at least 1.5 to 2 hours on a meal - especially in countries like France and Spain where lunch and dinner are events.

dinner events indeed can turn out to be lasting upto 2 hours (or more sometimes), sure that's true, but that's when you go with the wife (and kids), maybe parents / in-laws (or more family members). But if it's just you and a coworker, or 1 or 2 friends, it's doesnt always have to be "that much of an event", and often means just having an aperitif with olives / dried tomatoes / etc, a main course and a coffee afterwards and then the food is expected to be on our table within "roughly" 25 to 30 minutes.

Most countries don't pay waitstaff a lower minimum wage expecting tips to make up for it, either.

i used to work as a dishwasher at a restaurant and the waitresses didnt add the tip onto the bill, customers just left the tip on the table, and the tips got divided out to each person. they got the biggest cut of course, but every waitress i know complains way to much about their job being hard, when really they have the easiest job there. the cooks have to spend hours in front of hot grill, deep fryers, and stoves. waitresses get to spend most of their time out in the rest of the restaurant that isnt blazing hot. the dishwasher usually has it the worst, your the lowest on the food chain so you alwaya get shit from everyone else, they touch some nasty shit, i once had to dig through a large garbage can full of half eaten food that had been building up for 3 hours cuz a lady called our restuarant and told us her daughter had left her retainer in a napkin. i dug for 10 mins to find the stupid thing. and thats not even the worst.... one day a waitress came to me and said there was a mess in the womens restroom and i was also the one who cleaned bathrooms so i went in expecting to find paper towels everywhere or an over-flowing garbage can.... i was SOOO wrong. there was blood on the toilet seet and a uses tampon laying next to the toilet. nastiest thing ive ever done. so yeah, not getting a tip from a table that large is very insulting, just be glad you have the easiest job there and dont bitch about having a tough job. and if you were just being a shitty waitress then shame on you for trying to get sympathy after you failed to be a good employee and possibly lost the buisness of those people, but if they were just a bunch of stuck up pricks then im sorry you had to deal with a group of assholes.

Well, we certainly appreciate your half-sympathy for the waitress, it is disingenuous to talk about the cook having it worse. While this is most certainly true, their wage also reflects that. And I'll also grant you that dishwashers have really shitty jobs, being a waiter isn't exactly all puppies and rainbows like you seem to assume.

ya i know its not the easiest job ever, but the owner of the reataurant i worked at was a sexist bitch and the women had it wat better off. she wouldnt hire waitees, only waitresses cuz she thinks men are incapeable of being good waiters. she only hired men to cook and dishwash because she thought women shouldnt have to do the hard jobs. im sure there are a handfull of restaurants where conditions are different and a waitress has it just as bad as tbe other employees, but for the most part they dont appreciate how good they actually have it. i would take being on the wait staff over dishwashing anyday. i can handle the rude customes and other small irritations a waiters/waitresses endure.

this story is total bullshit, because I've never seen a restaurant that didn't add the gratuity in automatically on the check for a party of like 6 or 8+. They would have had to skimp on the bill itself to not tip nice fake story though, just needed the attention??

Get out more. It varies per state more than anything, but restaurants without auto-grat are certainly far from uncommon.

Get off your high horse #70. There are TONS of restaurants out there that don't automatically include gratuity on large parties. I know this because I work at one of them! And working for $2.13/hr to have people just be assholes in general to you isn't exactly butterflies and rainbows. I feel for you OP.

at the restaurant i work at we have to have the manager manually add the gratuity to the bill in the computer, so if we forget about it cause we are busy and you want your check right then, oh shit we forgot and you don't tip decently

i worked at a resraurant for a year and i never knew that gratuity existed. i think alot of smaller restaurants dont use that.

From the business perspective, a lot of companies simply don't give a damn about employee morale anymore, at least as far as menial jobs go. It's much cheaper to train new hires from time to time than to offer higher wages and better benefits to retain employees. In the restaurant business, this often means that the restaurant doesn't even begin to give a damn about adding a mandatory tip under any circumstance, TobyFunke, particularly in locales where it might cause trouble.
