Better than a sting from a box jellyfish - that one will kill you. But even an ordinary jellyfish sting hurts like hell and can send you into shock.

At least you are alive to have the reaction? The trip could have ended with your family writing it instead of you. If it is a common breed of jellyfish, consider investing in one of the full body bathing suits similar to what divers wear if you go to the area often. That, and ask about whether you need to keep a medication for the allergic reaction on you for future beach trips. Make sure the allergy gets documented, too- put your allergies on a card in your wallet and/or purse, so medics have a starting point in the future in case you are nonresponsive.

Even though OP made it out safely, it still sucks that this happened on a trip they've been waiting eight months for. I also don't think OP needs to spend hundreds of dollars on an expensive diving suit, this was obviously just an unfortunate incident.
