Today, I was talking to a guy I met online and have known for 4 years. I've fallen in love with him twice, one of those times being currently. He was supposed to visit this summer. I got an email from him saying he's really a 17 year old girl from Chesterfield, MO. FML

Today, I went out to meet a wonderful woman I'd chatted with online. I did have a few fears about if she was really just some guy trying to make a fool out of me. When I met her, she really was a girl, and was happy to see me. Problem: she was actually 13. I'm 34. FML

1. You don't meet anyone under 18, and ask for proof first. Going to meet a 17 year old is stupid. 2. You don't meet anyone you haven't spoken with on the phone for at least a few weeks. Email and texting isn't enough. Even if you talk with someone on the phone, there's no guarantee that it's the person you think it is. 3. You don't fly to meet anyone unless you have hotel arrangements made, a refundable ticket, and people in your life have all the details of the person, including name, physical address, phone number, and a picture. You never know if the person is going to be the next internet killer. That being said, I have met people from online and the worst thing that happened was they turned out to be jerks. If you take your time and talk on the phone for months, in addition to email/texting, you learn more about the person - but of course, not as much as spending a lot of actual, face to face, time with them.
