Maybe you should have spent more time reading the question if the answer carries that much weight in your life. What if it had been a life or death problem? "I misread the question" isn't going to mean much to a jury or the victim (s)

As just a normal person, I also found that analogy awful.

Write a well written letter explaining what happened.. Hopefully they'll understand.

I'm actually curious to read the essay and the essay question and I'd like to know how you read the question. It seems like it would ask be interesting

I did that once. It was awful. I ended up destroying my gpa because of one question on one exam.
