Today, after selling their car, my parents decided to inform me that my car (that I paid for myself) is now going to be the "Family Car". They also informed me that since it is, after all, my car, I'll still have to pay for the gas and maintenance. FML

If my parents did that to me I'd tell them they can either start contributing to gas and maintenance or they can start finding other ways to travel, like a bus, or a bike. They may be your parents but if you paid for that car with your own money, you should still have a say on who can and can't use it, and you shouldn't have to foot the car bills yourself if you aren't the only one using it.

Damn parents. You at least say SOMETHING... but sorry to say it probably won't work...

You should break something around the house "by accident" and say that since your parents bought it they have to pay for maintenance, even though it's a family thing.

I know this is an old story, but I can't help but comment, as it is so wrong, mean and absolutely shitty of those parents. Wauw, I feel so bad for you, OP! Can't believe anyone would treat their own child like that. That is just so wrong!

Seriously, fml should add a "Parents" category.

I'll assume you were under 18 at the time of posting. I'd have sold my car, and hidden the cash. Screw them. Hope it worked out for you.

Report it stolen if they don't have your permission to use, be sure to give a detailed description of its location

If my parents pulled this I would say no. If they then stole my car I would report it as stolen and press charges. 1) My parents never would have pulled this 2) My stepdad is still really bad about asserting himself and not being a doormat because he earned a truck himself and his parents stole it from him and gave it to his brother. Said brother gave it back years later.

Sorry to hear op, unless your under the age of 18 or whatever age it is where you live that your legally considered an adult or some other extenuating circumstances my response would have been **** that. Totally inappropriate unless as others have mentioned there was some form of compensation. Even then at least in my book manners and asking you nicely go along way.
