Today, after three and a half years of working dead-end jobs with a bachelor's degree, I got a call from a potential employer in my degree field, who wanted to set up an interview. The problem: the interview is across the country, and I'm too broke to pay the travel expenses. FML

Put it on credit card and go!

And this is why apprenticeships are better

How old are you? If you are "traditional age" for some one 3 years out of a bachelor's program, I would think your parents would be more than willing to give you the money to go on a job interview

This is post is strange to me...every adult job I have ever interviewed for (as in a job after college) has paid all travel expenses for an interview. That is their responsibility.

Yeah... it honestly never occurred to me that I'd have to pay for any of my cross-country flights that I did while interviewing... I mean I covered some incidentals (taxi, food, etc) myself and sent in receipts for reimbursement, but airfare and hotel were covered. Are people really expected to drop a thou on airfare because somebody says "hey we might maybe want to give you a job"?

Is the company too cheap to pay for the travel expenses? They're the ones who are interested in interviewing you. Interviewing candidates should be a business expense for a company.

Yeah. Look at it this way - they damn sure better pay for any business flights as an employee, why wouldn't you expect them to pay for your flight given that they're *not* paying you?

That's true. And if they aren't willing to pay the travel expenses to get to the interview, that's not very promising that their pay/compensation will be good good.

Be honest & see if you can do an initial phone or Skype interview, then if it looks promising Italy be worth your whole to borrow the money.
