Today, after weeks of therapy for severe depression, my therapist thought it would be helpful to confess my deepest problems to my friends, to prove that it was alright to trust people. I did. They laughed. Hard. FML

I think you need some new friends. Depression is a very serious thing.

OP, your shrink doesn't suck. he's doing his job, and his advice was actually pretty good. you're friends do kinda suck though. if they didn't take you seriously, don't confide in them anymore. find someone who will listen and care, because talking to someone about your problems who will actually listen and try to help you will make you feel better. good luck and don't give up. :)

YDI for placing too much trust in your friends. YDI for placing too much trust in your therapist. Lastly, YDI for opening up your deepest thoughts to your friends in general. You should reserve that only for your closest friend(s), assuming you can trust someone that much to begin with. Also, I might add that just because they laughed doesn't mean that they don't care. Sometimes people deepest thoughts can be rather amusing to the right people. That doesn't mean that they won't help you with them. Now if they just blow you off, that's the point at which you know who your real friends are(n't).

IAWTP Seriously, I know I've been amused sometimes when a friend of mine has told me something bad. I mean, shit, this site wouldn't be here if people didn't find amusement in bad things! But it doesn't mean I don't care, just that I am easily tickled. Besides, not all laughter is positive. Meaning, there is such a thing as cynical laughter. Aaaand... laughter is one of the best medicines. If you can see what your friends find amusing out of your situation, you can laugh with them. Laughing together makes the world a bit better.

Hey 80. No one ever said the therapist was the one "disclosing such information". Stop being a negative Ned.

Your therapist is a dick. I don't know if this applies to your area, but it looks like your therapist breached confidentiality when it wasn't called for. Whether or not you decide to sue his/her ass - ditch that therapist and get a new one. FYL.

Today, I reread this FML I remembered commenting on a while back. I realized that I, like many of the other commenters here, misread it and thought that the therapist had done the disclosure. I was wrong. FML ...your therapist is hereby forgiven. I hope you have ditched those friends by now.

Aww, that sucks, you need better friends.

I don't think your friends are really assholes. They probably thought it was a joke since most guys don't just go up to their friends and tell them that they are severely depressed. I know my friends would laugh if I told them that.

Maybe your problems are funny, and you should have a laugh also, because if you can't laugh at yourself, how can you laugh at any one else!!
