This is terrible advice. Witnesses are often the only protection one has when standing up to a bully. If you're absolutely certain the bully is pacifistic and won't hurt you, then fine, you can stand up to them alone. With some bullies, though, that puts you in physical danger. Also, most bullies will not be put off simply by you standing up to them. That will hurt their ego and make them want to assert themselves even more, often at your expense. So, OP, great job on standing up to someone bullying you, but it may not mark the end of the problem, so be cautious and never trade your safety and well-being for a chance to verbally show up the bully.

Also, I'm by no means saying you shouldn't stand up to a bully. It can have an immensely positive mental and emotional impact on you and it demonstrates remarkable courage, but it may not end the problem and may put you in a dangerous position,

Honestly, I think it's worth the detention. Who cares if you have to stay after school one day - you stood up for yourself, that's more important. Also, speaking as a teacher, we ARE there to help...you should let them (or one of them) know what's going on.
