Today, as I walked into the bank, I tripped and bumped into a security guard. He thought I was assaulting him, so he pinned me to the floor and called for backup as he held me at gunpoint. FML

sarahsehhati, I've had a gun pointed at my face twice, even being a cop's gun, it was scary. I'm a security guard myself, and if I treated someone like that I'd lose my security lisence, I'd want some form of apology for having a gun held at my head, too

Nope. They don't. The Israeli police do too. I was in 6th grade when they threw a tear gas canister into our taxi on the way to school when we stopped at the checkpoint. They laughed.

This attitude of militarizing police is really worrisome. They're meant to protect and serve, not oppress and attack.

Well it gets very difficult to protect and serve when the very people they swore to protect, look at them as pieces of shit and continuously show aggression towards them.

Security guard not police. It's also important to note the only difference between tripping into a guard or attacking him is intention, which is unlikely to be determined during the incident.

I have a feeling this is going to turn into a Mike Brown debate.

Since he's a security guard (not a cop) I'd guess he was already militarized. The armed security company I worked for actually hired veterans exclusively.

I don't like how over the top some security guards are, this would have scared the shit out of me! Sorry you had that happen to you OP.

Unfortunate event for sure. Security Guard was definitely in the wrong and way too on edge. Better luck next time you go to a bank!

#14, the security guard was in the wrong for protecting himself from what, at face value at the time, was an attack? And by retraining his "attacker" to prevent further incident? Yeah, you sound like a basic model sheep.

25, while I agree with you (except for the sheep part) you come off like a condescending douchebag.

I'm glad you used quotation marks on attacker, he tripped over and for that had a gun held to his head, it was a simple mistake and that guard should've been able to tell that easily. he wasnt punched or kicked, he just got bumped into, how does that justify having a gun pulled on you?

You can't really say that the guard should have been able to tell that easily. There's really no way to know, there's a number of ways that OP could have ran into or hit him and it seem like he was potentially "attacking" him. The guard restrained OP and didn't appear to hurt him too bad (he's posting an FML about it, and doesn't mention and injuries, so I assume nothing too serious happened other than a bad day) so at the end of the day the security guard was intending to do his job, and OP is at home free from injury. Also it is likely that OP ran into the guard from behind, which would mean that the guard could not see him, which could possibly justify the gun being pulled just as a potential defense since you don't know what's going on. Not saying that's what happened, just trying to look at all sides here.

And #14, if I'm paying a person to protect my bank, I'd rather him be on edge than lazy.

I would think that a security gaurd, or anyone for that matter, would be able to tell pretty quickly that someone had tripped rather than attacked. it's likely op looked unco afterwards which would be a dead give away. I'm not saying the gaurd was in the wrong for his actions in protecting the bank, but he massively overrated, if it was me I would've used my voice and asked what was happening. your gun should always be a last resort

so its fair to say the security guard had reason to be fearful at first. but after he had him to the ground and was not violently resisting, wouldnt it be obvious THEN, with no need of a gun?

Here comes everyones assumptions of how the situation happened and how they would have handled it.

Show it anyway

did he go like "whatever you say or do can and will be hold against you" ?

Unless you barreled into him with the force of a hippopotamus, that officer must know the feeling of an assault versus an innocent body contact! I don't see how anyone can take the officer's side here. That's outrageous, and it's becoming more and more common.

not to mention seeing op stumble afterwards

He's a security guard, not a police officer.

juturnaamo 29

He didn't say police officer. Security guards are often called security officers.

Security Guard implies unarmed. Security Officer implies armed. Most sites use that distinction.

Only in America. American law enforcement and security services seem to over react at everything. Rather then assessing the situation logically first. It seems they like to shoot first and then ask questions later. I hope you are ok. Did the security guard get reprimanded.

only in america? so youve lived in every other country to assess this?
