By A troubled ex med school student - 06/02/2013 03:08 - United States - Dublin

Today, I attended my first surgery as part of my program at med school. I found out that when I see someone's intestines, I vomit. Even if I'm still wearing a surgical mask. There goes the thousands of dollars I spent on college. FML

I have a fear of that happening when I train to be a vet. I can't stand blood but apparently I'll get used of it...

You could always try different medical fields if you have trouble operating on people. I could never do it, that's for sure, so good job on the effort

Find a specialty where you don't have to see people's innards. Talk to your school advisor; s/he may be able to help you work around your problem. Surgery may be out for you, but you may still be able to help people in another field.

Perhaps you could go into research rather than hands on medicine.

You get used to it. I get grossed out but never have had issues seeing this stuff... Seeing myself bleed is a whole nother story... Stepped on a tack and my goodness you'd thought I ruptured an artery. Other people bleeding is ok though.

Oh buck up kiddo! You're not the first nor will you be the last pre-med student to throw up the first time you see a surgery. Seeing the insides of another human being is disconcerting for most. And you don't have to be surgeon to be a doctor. The medical field is vast.

Not a waste. Change your intended specialty. You're still in Med school. That's why these rotations are for. There's also a test they'll give you to give you an idea of what specially you'll like the best.

2 things There are other medical-related things you can do. I feel like you should have learned about this way sooner than your first sit-in. Seriously. Didn't you take comparative, or maybe gross anatomy in your UNDERGRAD?

The human mind can get used to anything. Don't give up yet. Now you know what it looks like, it will take time. Just keep trying.
