Back. Up.
windows.old It's all there.
It actually kept all my files.
YDI for not backing up. Always, before a major system upgrade, back up your files. It doesn't matter whether it's Windows, Linux or MacOS, or whether they offer to keep your files. There's always a possibility of things going pear-shaped with any major system upgrade.
not possible u must did something wrong
this happened to my boyfriend too. it completely destroyed his hard drive and he needed a new one.
I didn't have that option, it just upgraded like a regular update and didn't touch my files. odd.
YDI, most everyone knows you have to back up your hard drive, and if you're really paranoid, double and triple back it up. Blindly trusting Windows will lead to this. Invest in a large memory USB drive or an external hard drive and now back up every so often. It's not too expensive now, and worth it
I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8 and everything was the same including my task bar and desktop
That simply doesn't happen. In your c drive, look for a folder called "windows old" they will be in there.

YOU HAVEN'T LOST EVERYTHING!!! in events like this Windows creates a backup. you'll find ALL your files in the "windows.old" folder. just search it up!!!
Don't trust them when it says it'll retain your old files, you need to always back up your files before upgrading or changing your OS. Sometimes Windows is nice enough to put your files in a folder on the Windows drive called "windows.old" which would be where everything you had on that drive before would be saved. However I don't know if they kept that feature in Windows 10.
