Today, I discovered that my son has an allergy to cats. My partner of two years, not wanting to fight, suggested a compromise: that my son and the cat take turns sleeping outside. FML

I think someone needs a partner with a brain.

It was probably a joke. I can't see anyone saying that seriously.

oh no no no no no no no, you can't do this. what you have is a gift of god. probably the most beautiful thing in you life, you can just make the cat sleep outside even if its every other day.

good for him for sticking up for the cats!

Unless he has a very severe reaction an allergy shot or meds would probably help him and the cat could stay...

My brother had a severe cat allergy (read: shots several times a week, for cats and other allergens). I am also allergic. We had cats at the time he was diagnosed, and he absolutely refused to allow us to get rid of them, saying his allergy wasn't their fault. We've had cats ever since, and both of us have built up a resistance to the allergy. Though we still get puffy and sneezy around new cats, it goes away over time. The only way to get rid of an allergy is to expose yourself to the allergen in safe doses--meaning keep the cat, but don't let the cat sleep on your son's bed, and get rid of any carpeting in his bedroom.

Psh, I'd pick my cat over a partner who had already a child. Call me coldhearted. ;)
