Today, I discovered that when my parents offered to help me pay for college, what they really meant is they would get the forms for me to apply for student loans. FML

To everyone saying get over it.... I will be seventeen when I start college. What kind of job can you get to pay for college when you're seventeen with no college education? See here's the thing, to pay you need a good job, and to get a good job you need college... OP: If your parents can't even afford to help pay, then that's a completely different story, but if they're rich and just don't feel like contributing at ALL, then FYL.

I call this a moment of misscommunication. When you offer to help pay for something it means you'll contribute some actual money to things. Like may be buying books. It also said that they OFFERED. She did not ASK them to. So, it's not her fault to expect that they give her money for certain things. I know when my children go to college I'll expect them to get a part time job, but I'd also HELP them pay for certain things. So, FYL for the fact your parents couldn't be clear on what they meant.

I really hate FMLs like this. Want to know why? Because the comment section is always filled with people moaning that anybody who gets even the slightest amount of financial help from their parents is some terribly spoilt brat. Admittedly it wouldn't be right for a person to _expect_ their parents to pay for them, but in this case, the OP's parents OFFERED. She has every right to be a bit disappointed that she's now facing a shitload of a debt that her parents led her to think she wouldn't have to deal with.

they offered help, not money. big difference

Generally when people offer to help pay for something, it means they're going to put money towards it. OP's parents may not have been lying outright, but they were still being extremely misleading.

op still should have asked. my aunt offered to help pay for college and later said she meant 50$ that's maybe lunch for a week. but I didn't complain even though she's rich and she may have been misleading but we made sure to clarify before getting our hopes up.

You still got money, however. And when someone offers to help pay for college, who in their right mind wouldn't think they meant giving them money?

I never got that money, it was only offered and I'm only a sophomore in high school. I just don't think the op should have expected too much unless her parents are filthy rich.

You mean to tell me that I've had to sit here and read your rambles about college finances, the OP being a spoiled brat, and giving spelling lessons when you're not even faced with going to college remotely soon? I feel like I just wasted an hour...

if you read my bullshit for an hour you're an idiot and a slow reader

You're a chipper one aren't ya? When you're faced with trying to pay for college get back to me. I've known for quite a while that my parents won't be able to contribute a dime for my college education, so I've been seeking other means to pay for it. If they had offered to help pay I would, however, assume they meant in a monetary sense. Most people would. If you for some reason wouldn't think that's what they meant then you're the idiot. The OP did nothing wrong, so stop trying to make it sound like she did.

is she the maid that put real sponges in the cake, drew the drapes on paper, and cut up bath towels to dress the turkey carcass?

i know we all come here because our wretched souls cry out for the oily nectar of schadenfreude, but man alive! Step back once in awhile and take perspective. This is a girl who just learned that, if she's going to a middle-of-the-road school at least, she'll be in debt for the next twenty years of her life. That's a steep drop in expectations from the ol' American dream of working hard for your family and making sure your kids have a better life than you did. I don't blame the parents, I don't blame the girl. We pay huge sums in an uncertain economy to make us competitive in an increasingly bleak job market, and who knows if we'll ever be able to afford homes of our own? You crass little fussbudgets just got a snapshot of America's faltering middle class, and practically all I hear is, "Tough *******, sling hash and suck it up!" Respect and sympathy aren't just words in a Rolling Stones song. Try to find some. By the way, OP: if you're fat, you probably deserve it.

exept for that last sentece... I agree!

As long as you don't get a useless degree (i.e. Theology or Art), you'll be able to pay off college just like the rest of us. I started a college fund for my 5 year old, but I know it won't pay for his college, and I expect him to be responsible for what he can. Or be really smart or good at football! I started one because I want him to have every opportunity I never did. That doesn't mean he deserves it though!!

had the same problem, but they made too much for me to get any...

in case you hadn't noticed the economy has been in the crapper for a while now so maybe they can't afford to pay for your education. so here's some advice from someone that paid their way through college with hard work and long hours....GET A ******* JOB AND GET A GRIP ON REALITY!! my parents weren't selfish like some asshat said, they were hard working MIDDLE CLASS folks who worked hard to get where they are today, they are very well off and so am I because I learned the hard way to appreciate my education and I respect every cent and dollar I have earned since college.

so????? your spoilt, get over it, apply and get a job like the rest of us.... O and happy St. Patricks day mother fackers!!!!!

I disagree. Yes sometimes it can be wasted but in my industry they don't even consider you a candidate if you didn't go to a well respected university. Literally not a single person that I work with went to a community college.
