Since everyone else had the same advice, I'll instead suggest wearing a disposable glove. Oh, and don't use pressure from that finger... just the others, if possible.

Been there, done that. Worst part was not being able to put my car in drive because it was my right hand, I couldn't move it to move the shifter. It was a long two weeks.

I wasn't able to drive until the stitches got removed! My car does not have power steering... hope your hand is better now!
