Okay... Well, the light doesn't mean you're completely out. You can still go a bit on it; definitely at least to the next gas station.
When you get that low, you can suck a lot of debris from the bottom of the gas tank into your carburetor or injection system, resulting in expensive repairs. The more miles/km you have on your car, the more debris will have built up.
You really shouldn't let your fuel tank get so empty like that, you're damaging your car's fuel pump, once it gets broken you will need a mechanic and a tow truck.
How far is your nearest gas station?? When my fuel light comes on I usually have 20-25 miles left.
not all cars are the same, my dads car for example comes on when he can go about 10 miles, but the closest gas station is about 15 miles away my car however can go for about 30-40 miles when it comes on
Not all cars have the same time the gas light comes on. Our truck comes on at 6 gallons. My suv is 3.5 gallons and the mustang is about 2.5 gallons. So again not every car is the same. Plus he may have not been able to get gas cuz he didn't have money until that day or it's the only gas station in town? Did you ever think of that? All you haters?
I feel like OP must have noticed the gas was low and was on the way to the station when it happened; wouldn't make much sense to be driving around with a low tank if OP knew they didn't have money to fill it, right?
At least for the future you know to fill up sooner.
YDI for not getting gas when you can see you're running low?
I guess now you know what you should do next time before you run out of gas. Experience makes us better OP, make sure you're prepared next time
I like to call that light the idiot light. YDI

If you're that close, just walk to the station and fill a can with gas
Hope it was downhill from there. FYI it's 1-2 gallons, depends on the car. Fill it up all the way as soon as the light comes on and you'll know for sure. Mines about 1 3/4 gallons.
