I'm glad they at least know where their cat is. About three years ago while I was visiting my dad, my cat ran off. A few months later the training police training center found her and then a few months after they found her my step-dad went to the center and realized that was our cat and brought her home.
Whose cat was it first? I had a cat that I got as a kitten that disappeared for six months and when it came back our neighbor accused us of stealing it even though we adopted it as a kitten. Thankfully we had proof. So is it your cat and they adopted it and think it's theirs? It was it theirs and you took it in? Requires follow up.
So did you adopt it from the street and it was theirs to begin with? Or is it your cat that they took off the street and think is their cat but it is actually yours? I had a cat that I got as a kitten and someone on the block 'adopted' it for a year and then it came back. We didn't know where it was until we saw flyers with his picture. So whose cat was it originally?

that's an awkward conversation. at least the kitty was in safe hands and very close.
And ur neighbor never found out ?
