Today, I got a gift from my wife in the form of divorce papers. She waited till after New Year's so it wouldn't show up on her taxes for 2011. FML

You file your taxes in February (give or take) for the previous year - January 1st to December 31st - everything earned in this time frame. So... how not?

That's just the same as filing single in terms of how much money u get back. It's the worst status. According to the tax code. Ur not entitled to any of the EIC or child tax credit

She isn't smart. If she knew the tax code she would know that unless u have a divorce decree stating u are legally divorced u are still married for tax purposes. And filing married separate is the worst filing status is terms of getting money back. Married filing joint is the best. So she's really not doing herself any favors by waiting.
