Today, I got back from vacation and realised I still had the motel key. The key-ring has the address on it, so you can post it back to them. I drove to the postbox and posted the key. I then discovered that the motel key won't start my car. FML

Why are you on FML? You should be outside, by the postbox.

Hey fellow new zealander i like how you said 'vacation' even though we don't say that here. nice

Someones trying to fit in with the American crowd on here.. Go Kiwi :P And for the record.. I've never been to a motel that doesn't use keys..

umm there are tons of motels that still use keys.. there are about 10 motels that ive been to along the beach in Cape Cod that use them, and they are all really nice.

In France all the places we stayed at had normal keys.

SHENANIGANS! If you're going to write a fake FML, get you facts straight. You drove to the mailbox and dropped the key. You mean you turned off your engine, took out the key and dropped it in the mailbox and then used the hotel key to star your car? Come on!

He might've had to park somewhere. Some of the less convenient "mailboxes" in my area are actually within the premises of stores in malls and plazas. OP probably had the two keys on the same ring, parked, walked in/over/wherever he needed to go, and took the wrong one off the ring.

Okay, so you were at home, I doubt you have the address of the hotel memorized, so you probably would have addressed the envelope at home (not to mention, it's so much easier to write at your house than in a car). Why would you wait to put the key into the envelope until you were at the mailbox? Why wouldn't you just put it in the envelope right after you had written the address? There would be absolutely no reason to wait until you were at the mailbox. You're either completely stupid or a liar.

read the fml again, the keyring that had the motel key on it has the motel address on it so...no envelope needed. Just drop the thing in the mailbox. What the hell, do they not teach reading comprehension in school anymore?

What envelope?? "The key-ring has the address on it, so you can post it back to them." The way I took it is that all the OP needed to do was drop the key-ring in the mailbox, no envelope necessary. Either the motel could have a pre-existing agreement with the postal service (likely), or they'd get charged on delivery.

Perhaps all the commenters saying things like "what sort of crap motel still uses keys" are American. I don't know about America, but in Australia (and New Zealand I'd guess - we're quite similar) a lot of places still use keys. I travel a lot and while I don't stay in expensive hotels I don't stay in trash places either, and I'd say a quarter to a third of places still use keys. Others use either keycards or combination locks. I just got back from a holiday to Sydney & the Snowy Mountains, and both places I stayed used keys.
