Today, I got yelled at in my office. It's construction, and I'm the youngest woman. One of my male bosses yelled at me because grown-ass adults won't sign in the log. Either I get my ass kicked by construction guys over a sign-in sheet, or yelled at by my boss. I can't win. FML

Hi guys, OP here. Some background info- The guy who yelled at me is only here 80% of the week, and he's not the boss I report to. He just thinks he is, and how he behaved was unacceptable.(He's trying to make the office his own show, but it's not working.) The boss of my division wasn't happy about how he handled things, so he was definitely in the wrong. My co workers are defending me, and this wasn't my fault since it's not my responsibility. I'm a receptionist, not an office manager. If they don't want to sign in- he should be yelling at THEM and not me.

If it's your job, then find a way to compel them to sign the log. I work in construction, and if the guys don't clock in or whatever we need them to do in the morning, then they get no vehicle keys or work orders. And if they don't get their work done or they're short on hours because they screwed around, then it's their ass, not mine or anyone else in the office.

Well at least they are standing up for you against a man on a power trip! Hope it gets better OP!

Why don't you just build your way out of it?

Being yelled at is clearly a real possibility while physical harm from your peers is highly unlikely even if they are miffed. I doubt they would face jail time for assault over a sign in sheet. It sucks, but the "win" is being more strict in regards to having them sign in even if it's ridiculous that grown ass people need someone to coddle and hold their hand. Sorry that your boss is an asshole, OP.

just do what you have to do in regards to your job and stand your ground.

It sucks that your boss yelled at you, as it sounds like you could use his support. Maybe approach him and explain the issues you are having. If he isn't aware of the problem it probably just looks like your not doing your job.

They would beat up a girl? You should go to HR about that. That's not cool.

Or beat up anyone, for that matter. Especially over time cards...like really

Hey, if they don't wanna sign in, they don't get their hours for the day. it's really for everyone's benefit, including theirs

I work in construction too & learned that I had to be strict / stubborn to get my point across & make the "macho" guys do what they have to. The construction guys have no right to "kick your ass", they have 2 choices, either sign & work, or not get paid. You need to put your foot down, they're not allowed to step over you anymore.

Why do genders and age matter here?

Because in male dominated fields you don't get a lot of respect if you're female and young. And if you try and be strict you are called a bitch etc. It's hard and it's one of the reasons not many women want to work in those fields.

@14 That isn't true and people only think it's true because so many people keep talking about it. There are jobs where it is a problem, but those are rare. The reason woman don't choose male oriented jobs is because they THINK those issues might be a problem. If we stop selling this lie, then maybe woman will choose male orientated jobs more.

Actually people are not talking enough about it because many women think it's their own fault or think it's normal behaviour. I experienced this in every job I did and throughout university and every woman I've met there had the same experience. So don't just say that it isn't true especially if you're male. If you are a woman in one of those fields, then consider yourself lucky that you didn't experience it, yet.
