Hopefully she knew it was just a simple misunderstanding. Tbf, I'm sure she's heard all the jokes before, but you'd think she might have phrased it so it was clear it was her name she was telling you.
one of my friends moms name is Gaye. she's pretty hot
hahahah xD What moron calls his child Gaye?
His... of course.
LOL! I don't see how she could be mean to you about that! It's not like you said something mean, like "Ew, you are going to hell!" You were sweet about it, so it revealed a positive aspect of your personality if anything! I wouldn't worry about it too much. :-) It isn't a terrible reflection on your character if you don't get the job.
I doubt comforting a stranger about her homosexuality is a response that everyone would see as positive. Sure, it's better than saying "You're going to hell!", and OP meant well. However, it could also imply that OP thinks the boss is apologizing or explaining herself, or needs to be reassured and validated about her sexuality.
Hmm, that's a good point. A response more like "that's cool" or something like that maybe would be what would be what to say if a stranger randomly told you they were gay? That would have been a little less awkward in general, too. It would have ended up coming off as "Hey, that's cool your name is Gaye." Perhaps a little unconventional, but hey, it works.
What if she was against homosexuality huh? She would be all like; "if you don't agree with me, you don't get to work with me". So maybe she was affronted by your sexual openness, not that you mistook her name. I don't know lol, people can be weird, I just thought of this and decided to post it. :D
This is an example of "don't say anything if you don't know what to say". If more people practiced this adage, there would be a lot less foot-in-mouth disease.
Gaye?!?! That is the ugliest name! I wouldn't said the same thing...or just stare at her.
#15's comment made me lol in class. good job.

I would've been confused too OP.
You'd think someone named Gaye would be used to that reaction by now, and would introduce herself as "Gaye Smith", or "My name is Gaye. "
