It's probably cause you were talking so slowly. She put the fork in the microwave when you said "and".
What did you say, exactly? Because it's not damaging at all. The object will build up a charge while it's in, and if there's a short enough gap on the object, it'll spark - harmlessly. Things like crumpled tinfoil and fork tines will spark, but only to itself - unless it's touching the side, in which case there's a small chance of damage.
You can put metal in the microwave.. They actually recommend putting a spoon into coffee or whatever to stop it exploding when you take it out of the microwave.
that's something completely different. that's when your liquid becomes super heated and can "explode" giving you burns.
Well done.. I was pointing out that putting metal in a microwave is ok by raising the issue of superheating liquids. Putting a spoon in it stops it superheating and spraying you with scalding hot water. Ergo, putting metal in the microwave is FINE!
that stinks.
Her brains must have been cooked to not be able to understand that.
It could be that the mom may not have thought that the stuff she was putting in would affect the microwave. It amazes me how much stuff looks like it wouldn't be microwave safe(like those sheets of foil on food from take out places) really are safe for the microwave, and things you would think are safe, are not. I once had a plastic storage device that I assumed was microwave safe, and it melted in the microwave. But the fun is when you replace the microwaves, every time I replace one(I tend to replace them every 3 yrs or so), I always have a little fun with it outside before tossing it in the garbage :)
Obviously you explained too slowly.
When it catches fire, hopefully she is smart enough to operate the fire extinguisher.

Make her learn the hard way.
That's her mistake. She is probably one of those people that puts evertything in the microwave. "oh, I see a laptop, let's microwave that!"
