Been there, done that! I actually didn't find it as terrible as the day where my parasitology teacher bring us some of his own feces, freshly collected, for us to play with... Brrrrrr

Why a stray dog's? How do you know it was a stray, maybe it is just a free range dog with an owner who is more than happy with the dog having run of the neighborhood? Wouldn't the local animal shelter be easier?
