Today, I heard that there was supposed to be a huge blizzard heading our way, so I went out to stock up on groceries. After spending $600 on food, I drove home and packed most of it into the fridge and freezer just in time for our power to go out. FML

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you supposed to buy food that can be stored and doesn't perish at room temperature when a storm heads your way?

if it's cold enough to snow, put all the stuff outside

put it outside... like porch... blizzard = snow = cold

Buy a generator next time. That way you can keep your fridge running when power goes out. You just have to make sure you have gasoline on hand to power the generator. We are definitely buying one to be prepared.

That happened to my family once. The good thing was that the power company reimbursed everyone who had a receipt from buying groceries recently before the power went out!

I heard that dry ice can keep an unpowered fridge/freezer cold for a substantial period of time, provide you don't open the doors too frequently.

Some areas hand it out during storms. Most grocery and party supply stores have it, especially this time of year. But if the person is snowed on and can't get to a place to get it, it doesn't matter. As most people are saying, putting it outside works well. We use to keep food on our deck during storms we weren't expecting. I can't recall even losing milk when we did that. The good thing about snow, is ice/water is a valuable resource in a storm. And there is plenty of it just laying around.

I kind of get OP's logic, "Blizzard coming. Won't be able to leave house. Want meat and dairy". But I thought it's common sense that when a storm is coming, you might lose power or have to evacuate. This is a good lesson for next time. Until the power's back, put the stuff outside and in coolers filled with ice and snow. Next time: lots of bottled water, canned goods, other non perishables that don't need to be cooked, and a manual can opener.

huge blizzard=free natural freezer. but I'd rather get canned foods and water than perishables

why would you buy food that needs to be stored in the freezer when there is going to be a blizzard. i don't understand
