What's with all these nonsense comments saying dogs are gross and not to kiss them? I have four dogs, all of which are like my children, and all of which get and give me kisses all the time. They're a lot cleaner and a lot more important than some humans I know. That being said, since it's your own dog, you should know better, OP. Unless they love cuddles and kisses like mine do, sticking your face in theirs is a good reason for them to defend themselves and attack.

Dogs usually give signals they are about to bite. Didn't you notice the look on the dog's face? They usually give you an intense eye to eye contact stare, or glare at you from the side if you are kissing her on her cheek. Plus their ears and stance changes.

Among dogs (or at least wolves) it is often a sign of submission to nip or lick at the side of the face near the mouth. Maybe your dog just thought you were submitting and decided to assert its dominance

Between two dogs it's a sign of aggression to hover over or get directly in the others face. They don't understand human concepts such as hugs. YDI for not knowing more about your own pet.
