Today, I lay in bed reflecting on my fiancé's complaint about my lack of displays of affection. I felt terrible, so I rolled over and hugged him in his sleep. He's a fully trained martial artist and his immediate reaction was to try to snap my neck. FML

Judont want to startle the guy apparently.

Don't be surprised, no affection so he probably didn't expect that it was you

I'd "accidentally" kill you if you woke me up

Nice, I was waiting on this getting approved so I could add it to my favorites. Glad to, I'm assuming, see that the neck snap was unsuccessful. At least you know he didn't mean to do it, and you're making attempts to be more affectionate with him. FYL, because I don't see anyone being at fault.

As a martial artist myself I can say he isn't fully trained if he reacted without being 100% he was actually being attacked first. If he was being attacked, his response would have been fine. But, his actions could have seriously hurt you over an innocent move.

This. I was scrolling the comments just to find someone who was thinking what I was thinking. I never understand how people's immediate reaction upon waking is violence. Snapping her neck, really? What about if/when he has kids? What about pets? That is dangerous in the extreme. At first, I thought maybe it was part of training his reflexes or something, but you pointed out that a well-trained martial artist would know to make sure there is a threat before engaging. IDK maybe the guy has been robbed before or has PTSD or something. But really attempting to snap someone's neck - not punch or grab - but to snap their neck and immediately kill them upon waking up just seems wrong and effing dangerous to me. Glad you seem to be taking it so calmly, OP. I'd be freaking out. God forbid this guy ever has a nightmare with you in bed next to him.

Exactly. Martial artist are, above all else, supposed to have self control. This guy obviously has a long way to go if he goes straight for a kill rather then a grab or disable until he can assess the situation. Fyl op.

Your comment is very true, but he was asleep, which means that he was startled, thinking he was being held by an attacker, which is why that was his reaction. I could be wrong, but, this is what I think.

Some people do weird shit when they get woken up unexpectedly.

There's definitely a control issue. In the 15 years I've been doing martial arts, stuff like this has happened less than a handful of times. I think twice dreams have made me wake up in fight or flight mode, and once a person snuck up on me while at work and grabbed me, and it caused me to strike at them reflexively, but in the last second I saw who it was and the strike became a slap to the chest. But I definitely haven't tried to kill any friends or girlfriends in my sleep.

I was once woken up by my boyfriend from a night terror caused from PTSD. Unfortunately in the dream, he was attacking me, so when I woke up I started trying to defend myself by hitting him.

I think some people are misunderstanding. The issue isn't with the fact he reacted with an attack as much as it went straight to a killing move.

Doomed Gemini, if he's a "fully trained" martial artist, reacting with a strike in an unknown situation shows that he's not mentally trained. Then you add the "killing move" part, going for a incredibly hard to get move, that's physically hard to do, when a simple strike or grab will work. I think the boyfriend hangs out at the arcade with Bart Simpson playing the Touch of Death.

Good on you for trying to remedy your lack of affection. Or at least your displays of affection. But let this be a lesson to you. Wait until the guy is actually awake. Thankfully you're okay OP. Good luck.

I said the dude has control issues and was down voted 3 times. Thanks for the confirmation.

no one has perfect control the second they wake up. or, apparently, still asleep. the fact that he went straight for the neck snapping is a concern.

I agree, there's simply being startled and hitting someone and then there's going straight for their neck. Until he gets some control she should probably sleep in a different bed lol
