Today, I left my grandmother's burial to take a midterm. Earlier I e-mailed the professor to ask permission to take it later, and she flat out said "no." I left my grieving family, and traveled hours back to school. I went to class, only to discover that the prof decided to move the exam date. FML

@71 According to Urban Dictionary the word **** means "A nasty person. Used in Australia and UK as a synonym for bastard (but a really bad one)." For this professor/**** to flat out say no even though there was a perfectly good reason for the OP to want to take the exam on a later date makes the professor a ****. Would it have been so difficult for the professor/**** to let the OP take the test in a testing center?

The number of people who have never heard of a teaching contract amazes me. Look one up sometime before you start blaming the professor for not jeopardizing their teaching position in order to bend over backward for each students unique circumstances

Why do people have to be such assholes? For her to flat out say no to a make up exam? Pretty insensitive, but okay. For her to change the date of the exam without telling the student? Beyond asshole-ish. Report to the dean or her higher up. Now.

wow your teacher is a serious ass hole, they should have been more organized and considered- how do they expect you to write your exam with a clear mind after losing someome in the family? Some people are cruel.

As a faculty member, assuming that you properly explained your situation, the prof is a complete asshole. I always give the benefit of the doubt, unless its obvious I'm being played (which is frequent). Start by contacting the department chair and explain the situation and your complaint. If its respectful, it should be heard. Even though this is an emotional nightmare, its not that serious unfortunately. You should ask for a verbal reprimand, which will end up in the profs evaluation and will cost them part of a raise. If you get no satisfaction, go to the dean. If that does not work, go to the student paper. If its well written and not a public flogging, it will do more good than anything else. Good luck.

Your prof is an asshole. That's not right, if she doubts you, then she should have asked for proof, not said no immediately.

Hm. As a fellow student, I can kind of understand why your professor wouldn't want you to take the test at a later date. It's unfortunate, but sometimes shit happens. You made the tough but right decision to leave the funeral early to do what you had to do, and I for one respect you for that. The professor was pretty out of line by not informing you about the change though. That is absolutely unacceptable, and I would be VERY surprised to hear if that faculty member wasn't reprimanded in some way, tenured or not. You can definitely spearhead that process by going to the school administration immediately. If you know of other complaints from other students, go together and maybe you can bring about some serious solutions. On a side note, rofl at #23.

I would egg their house if I was you.

Your professors an ass. What kind of professor doesn't understand that? You should complain, I can't believe they didn't inform you of the change of date. Write an angry letter!! Or a couple to everyone in charge at your University. I know I would
