Today, I met a new client in person for the first time. When I went to shake his hand, it was made of plastic. Startled, I laughed thinking it was a practical joke. It wasn't. FML

#1 is an epic fail and when meeting a new person, especially a client, never assume they are joking until they admit to joking. but i can see how this happened

It probably happens all the time to him because a fake hand is surprising and people instinctively laugh in awkward situations. As long as you were cool about it afterward, no need to dwell on it.

dude, someone should have given you the intel. wtf kind of company do you work for that no one told you?

thats pretty awkward...guess you learned your lesson lol

People who are asking why he'd extend the arm with a prosthetic limb: what is he supposed to do? Say, "Oh, by the way, I have a fake hand so let's shake with the other arm"? Maybe he doesn't want to constantly put focus on his hand every time he meets someone new, maybe he just wants to be treated like everyone else without fuss. #23, have you ever heard of a phantom limb? It's the sensation that the limb is still attached and functional. I could easily see how someone might experience something like this and then reach out for a handshake without a second thought. Even without phantom limb, they might have grown so accustomed to their prosthetic arm that it doesn't cross their mind anyways.

Why would it be a practical joke? You so deserved that one.

#36- I couldn't have said it better

I agree with #36, but dont worry about it man most of us would've done the same thing in an awkward situation.

What I don't get is why this guy would stick out his hand for you to shake if it was prosthetic? I think that he should be more forgiving of you for laughing. It was unexpected and not an everyday thing. I would understand if I were your client.

I don't blame you.....it's not like it's a common thing to happen to shake a prosthetic hand And if the client had a sense of humour...I hope he did, he woulda just brushed it off and gotten over it =)
