The key is to watch it. They were used as hunting weapons so that blow must have hurt, sorry OP. I've thrown a boomerang just for fun and my technique must be utter balls cause it only came back once or twice. While I'm sorry about your nose, nice throw? Unlucky beginners luck right there.
