Today, I refused to let two students into class because they were 15 minutes late. It turns out they were late because they had gone to buy me a birthday cake. FML

LimeyGoodteeth tells us more.

I am the original poster. It was an adult ESOL class. School policy - strictly adhered to - is that students can't be admitted if they are more than 5 minutes late and all students know this. Lateness is disruptive and disrespectful to other students. We all eventually had the cake later anyway!

that's why u always ask before u act..

That's what my cousin does. She shows up really late but she always has food for the teacher and says she was buying him food. Works like a charm. She is his favorite student.

Even if they were 15 minutes late without a cake, why would you keep them out even longer? It's like, "You're late, so your punishment is staying out of class and not having to do work. Take that".

it depends on the attendance policy and whether or not op accepts homework if the student is absent or is removed from class. op might be in a department where there is a maximum number of days the student can miss without failing the class. I count a student who is more than ten minutes late as absent, and they can't turn in their homework. there are exceptions, but they'd have to be pretty damn unavoidable.

37 -What is the the purpose of that? Today's society is far too focused on time and deadlines and numbers. It causes stress and takes away from life. People need to be more relaxed. I have problems being late for things. When other people are late I don't care very much. I live by better late than never. Obviously, this wouldn't apply to everything. For example, flights, medical appts, etc. But in general, I feel people need to relax.

pretty much ya. that's what bitchy teachers do. I failed a class because I was 20min late and she wouldn't let me turn in a paper that's due that day.

Sorry for the double "the" in my post.

Not saying I agree with the teachers, but it is disruptive. A.) The teacher has to explain everything all over again to those who weren't there B.) It is visually disruptive to see students strolling in more than 15 minutes late and the teacher has to go back and make sure they are marked present C.) You may not have time to complete the work especially if it's a lab which are usually timed and I doubt you would have the necessary materials to do it at home So I can see where some of them get their frustration.

To A) no reason at all for a teacher to explain things again, the student missed part of the lecture and will either get the motes or will get punished by missing those on the exam. B) I agree to this statement aside from marking present, they should be counted absent. The distraction is clearly there though. C) If it is a lab they take a 0 for the day generally or are forced to make it up on another day. 15 minutes late is a bit weird for that but it depends on the course most likely.

That's when you apologize, then give them a class to do whatever. Every kid will appreciate that.

I had a teacher like that once. It's annoying when teachers abuse their position of power. How does stopping a student from being in class help anything?

if your late to class you obviously don't care, so if they kick you out, you won't learn, therefore fail

Not true at all, 62. There are MANY, many reasons why a student might be late, and it has nothing to do with "NOT CARING"..... :/ So closed-minded......

is that a big deal? i graduated last year and when we got kicked out of class we just went and hungout, no one really cared... our lifes werent ******, if anything improved a little

In some places here (I don't know about other countries) we have schools where the doors lock after 5 mins, so if you're late you're stuffed. This is in the kind of schools where they have metal detectors and treat the pupils like criminals. I think it's a crowd control thing but I don't really know how it's supposed to help.

is your school like a high security school with airport style secutiry?

I never said my school :/ I'm not at school. I just said SOME schools here (as in UK) have that

Hey, they weren't trying to demise your rural background.

Arsonnist 3

That's what they get. Everyone knows that teachers only eat apples.

maybe next time you'll listen to your students instead of trying to be a bad ass. and if it were me I would have shown u the cake and threw it in the trash. I hated teachers like you

If I was one of the students with the cake, I would have suggested we just sit out there and eat some of the cake. Don't want to waste it.

32: Rules exist in order to be followed though, not so people can just ignore them and do whatever they want. OP was just doing what they were *supposed* to do in that situation (most likely their school has a rule that you can't go to class if you're more than X minutes late). The students were the ones who should've been listening (to whatever rules their school has about lateness, and what time class starts at). They should've just bought a cake earlier, or not at all.
