Today, I refused to let two students into class because they were 15 minutes late. It turns out they were late because they had gone to buy me a birthday cake. FML

LimeyGoodteeth tells us more.

I am the original poster. It was an adult ESOL class. School policy - strictly adhered to - is that students can't be admitted if they are more than 5 minutes late and all students know this. Lateness is disruptive and disrespectful to other students. We all eventually had the cake later anyway!

that's why u always ask before u act..

That's what my cousin does. She shows up really late but she always has food for the teacher and says she was buying him food. Works like a charm. She is his favorite student.

fyl, op. stay strong, though...if you give in, they'll give you shit until the year's over. everyone else: under ordinary circumstances, being that late to a class is a sign of disrespect. it says you don't value your teacher or your classmates enough to plan better and not interrupt the lecture and/or classwork. yes, occasionally shit happens, but if it's keeping you longer than five minutes, it's rude to saunter in as though the school owes you something for bothering to show up.

This. I was late quite a bit but not usually on purpose(lots of bad luck through out highschool) and the majority of students that just saunter into class 15 minutes late or later usually seemed to think that it doesn't matter and that it's such a chore to go to class. if you don't want to go to class don't go to class. Don't **** up everyone else's time by coming in 15+ minutes late.

Well that sucks. Thing is they could have told Op, "sorry were late but we have a surprise for you". some sort of explanation would be good. it sounds like they didn't tell OP anything And he felt like shit for not knowing.

I thought the rule was, you let kids into class but make them wait behind as late as they came.

Not only will your kids not be late next year, you also wont be getting a cake. Lolol -smh-

FYL. it's the rules sometimes. here in university they aren't allowed in as they would disrupt the class and annoy all students.

I don't see anything wrong. you were trying to be a good teacher, teaching them don't be late, and they happened to cake. big deal

there are some things you need to let happen fluently. by that I mean quickly let them in, count them tardy, and continue the lesson. no one likes a cruel teacher..
