Maybe she's lying? Maybe it's her ex or a friend and it makes her feel good by pretending she's in a relationship. People do it more often than you would think...

sometimes there's an occasional compulsive liar you come across... I've had friends I would talk to that lied about having a baby brother and her mom would dress him up in a sunflower dress, because she wanted a girl....& she never even had a baby brother OR sister. like, what the ****! hahaha
