Today, I spoke to a highly recommended therapist for my special-needs child. After 45 minutes of describing our challenges, heartbreaks and other very personal information, she told me that her schedule was permanently full. But she invited me to go through the phone book to find someone else. FML

OP here - uh, no. You are making things up out of whole cloth. I would never self-diagnose my kid. We have been through years of trying to get the best help we can find, and that does not include charlatans, vaccine-deniers and the internet. Try again.

Why would she even speak to you in the first place if she knew she was full? Way to waste your time, esp for something that's so delicate. I hope you find someone better.

That's really unprofessional I can't see why they are highly recommended. I hope you find a good therapist to help you with your kid. Special need therapists can be really great if you get a good one. I know this because I use to see one for medical related anxiety problems... Best of luck OP.

Tell whoever recommended the therapist about this unprofessional treatment. You don't say what kind of therapist but I worked in occupational therapy for years and there is no way to be permanently booked. Patients come off therapy at some point

If you came to her on a recommendation and she suggested you look through the phone book, you don't want her as a therapist. Any therapist with compassion would have at least suggested another doctor.

Let me guess, they charged you for a full hour also

You need to take a close, hard look at your behavior. It's possible it's not just your child that has "special needs".

Clearly you're a trolling asshole who doesn't understand the situation.

Perhaps the therapist wanted to have an idea on what she was going through to be able to find a more suitable one?

I can tell you from personal experience, they planned to help you. But once hearing all that was wrong they realized it wasn't a simple problem to fix so they told you that so you would go see someone else and not bother them with it. I know the feeling, so i am truly sorry.

OP here - actually, we figured it was because our problems were too mundane to be interesting to her. You can't publish papers on very high-functioning non neurotypical kids. That's just not interesting enough.

Well... Seems like she doesn't actually care about the kids. Just getting published. So you're probably better off without her

I'm just saying, while it may have made you mad because it came across as unprofessional, it's better that you get the right therapist for your child. You don't want to waste your money on a therapist who can't help them (or are of little help) because they are SO expensive and it'll save you time in the long run. I had severe anorexia and bulimia for 10 years, and when I was first looking into recovery I had 4 therapists do a session with me, only to tell me that my problems were too severe for their level and that I needed to find a new therapist. Sometimes they just aren't qualified, at least the one you went to was nice enough to find you other therapists instead of turning you away blind like mine did.

The therapist didn't help op find one at all, instead told op top go through the phone book.. however you are correct on it being better to find one that fits, I saw 9 different therapists for severe post traumatic stress disorder before settling on the one who worked with me for 3 years and really improved my quality of living. therapists are also people, and just like not every individual is going to be your best buddy not every therapist is going to work out.

She was just being a nosey bitch, file a complaint with her supervisor.. She was very unprofessional.
