me612_fml tells us more.
It was my car and I did drive it to meet them, they test drove the car, turned it off as we negotiated and then when they went to start it again, it didn't start. Apparently, the fuel pump went out in it. Also, I gave the money back because I would have felt like a jerk for not doing that. And I wish that this was fake...then I wouldn't be out a couple thousand dollars right now.

I'm not sure if you did this or even knew about it but you should have started it up during the time you were trying to sell it. Then you probably would have sold it. Though in your defense, the potential buyer should have test drove it.
I'm aware your answer was 2 years ago, but OP stated the car WAS started before meeting the buyer, and the buyer DID test drive the car. It was after all that and completion of the sale that it wouldn't start back up. A ridiculous amount of people are failing to READ this FML.
No you didn't
Life can be ironic.
I had a similar situation a couple years ago. We needed the money and I was so excited to have it in hand. The guy came and checked it out, it started perfect, shifted fine, but he didn't drive it. We went to meet at a notary to sign the title over and I gave him the keys. The transmission went out on it when he came to pick it up and tried to drive away. Sigh.... my husband gave him the refund and got the title retransferred back to us again. I went home and had a pity party. We lowered the price significantly and had it sold again by the end of the month. So I definitely feel your pain, OP.
I did this once with a car sale. I knew it would have a rough idle and a miss unless it was warmed up really well, so when I took them on the test drive, I ran it hard and didn't dare shut it off until it was fully up to operating temperature. It worked !
All it is is a fuel pump. I would have replaced it and tried selling it back to them. I mean use quality parts, show me a receipt, the old pump, and giver her a crank. You would have had a sold car.
I commend the OP for doing the ethical thing. Good ethics like that are rare in today's world.

depending on what type of car it is and how old, a fuel pump is only about $150, give or take some. My boyfriends cost $120 and my dad's cost $200. Tell them you will have it fixed and then sell it to them.
Who would buy a car without test driving it first? Your buyer sounds like a dolt.
