Today, I thought that I had finally sold the car I've been trying to sell for two years. I had the money in my hand and had given over the title. As the "new" owner went to drive it away, the car wouldn't start. I had to give the money back. FML

It was my car and I did drive it to meet them, they test drove the car, turned it off as we negotiated and then when they went to start it again, it didn't start. Apparently, the fuel pump went out in it. Also, I gave the money back because I would have felt like a jerk for not doing that. And I wish that this was fake...then I wouldn't be out a couple thousand dollars right now.

depending on what type of car it is and how old, a fuel pump is only about $150, give or take some. My boyfriends cost $120 and my dad's cost $200. Tell them you will have it fixed and then sell it to them.

Who would buy a car without test driving it first? Your buyer sounds like a dolt.

YDI for trying to sell a lemon. An overpriced lemon evidently, from how long it took you to sell it.

A fuel pump doesn't make it a lemon. Fuel pumps go out without warning all the time. Especially if you're prone to driving your car on E. As for overpriced, I agree, that's most likely why it's taken so long to sell. If it's priced right, it sells quick.

Are you trying to tell us someone would buy a car without taking it for a test drive???? No way! BS all the way

Should have called 'no backsies'

I feel your pain. I was selling my car and the guy showed up with money In hand. But when I went to start it up it wouldn't turn over. So he left. About 10 min after he left it finally started

Uh why wouldn't u make sure it ran before he came over? Common sense people .... Use it!

OP tested it ran, and the buyer test drove it. Reading, people. Use it!

Technically, from a legal standpoint, this is a contract - the buyer gave you the money for the product after he test drived it and everything, so if he gave you the money and the car didn't start afterward, he still owns the car. You didn't HAVE to give the money back, technically speaking. He bought the car, you negotiated a contract, and the contract was fulfilled. End of story.

it probably just needs a jump if it hasn't been turned on in a while. plus, car sales like that are "as is" and if he gave you the money and you gave the title, its sold.

YDI for trying to sell a lemon to an innocent customer douchebag.
