Maybe that's his way of trying to help. I always play sad music when I'm heart broken, relate to the songs, cry and then have a clearer mind afterwards.
His dad did it specifically to see him cry. Any help the OP may have received was unintentional.
On the other hand, listening to sad songs when you're sad might actually help you feel better (suggested evidence in a psychological study)
