Today, I told my students that I would be absent tomorrow because my wife was giving birth. They burst into applause... not to congratulate me on the new baby. FML

Depending on how old the students are, it's pretty much a given that they'll applaud for the teacher being gone. It's generally just how students are.

My junior year of high school, my history teacher announced to the class that his wife was pregnant. Everyone clapped, and he said "Thank you... I worked real hard." Awkward!
