Everyone loves substitute teachers. I'm guessing you teach a fairly young grade?
umm...apparently some of you people didn't read the part that it was his WIFE having the baby...this is not a female teacher who's 9 months pregnant and just now telling the class she's giving birth! DUH! OP: kind of sucks as a reaction to you being gone, but for most students, a sub means they think they'll have an easy day. I'm sure they were applauding just because they don't think they'll do anything the next day (although I hope that's not true! I'm studying to be a teacher right now so I hope I never start letting days I'm gone become free days!) # 46 (and any others)--Don't just assume he's a bad teacher because the kids are excited about a sub. This actually probably has absolutely no reflection on his effectiveness as a teacher.
