Today, I was bombarded with phone calls from debt collectors. After some investigation, it turns out my grandma, who has dementia, has been going into our mailbox and throwing away the outgoing mail because it wasn't addressed to her. I'm now apparently 3 months behind in payments. FML

First of all ... My grandma was throwing away my outgoing mail, I own rental properties and I pay with money orders so I'm always right on my bank account, a lot of my payments are the same every month I never gave it a thought to double check, cause it's like clockwork. Even had I written checks my statements come quarterly. I keep copies of my money orders thankfully. As for my grandma we didn't realize she was this bad...

How do you not realize you haven't been paying bills? Pretty sure I'd notice that I had a lot, or ANY, money in the bank.

This is impossible. You didn't read statements or check your bank balance for three months? You didn't notice that checks were not getting cashed? Don't you balance your checkbook every month? This is a YDI if I've ever read one...

Maybe you could claim you've got dementia?

This is tough one. Your fml is a FYL and a YDI. FYL because grandmother has dementia and that could have honestly distracted you from other responsibilities while taking care of her... That and she keeps throwing out your mail which can make things easy to lose track of during a difficult time. YDI because there should have been a way for you to notice bills not being paid (i.e. More money than usual, statements, bank information, could have done online services if offered, etc).

Yeah, I'm gonna agree with everyone else on this. That sucks, but going three months without making sure your checks were clearing and not noticing late charges/past due notices on your bills was highly irresponsible.

Bills and bank statements thrown out by grandma.

It seems like you would realize the bulls have not arrived would have sent a signal....and I know this excuse will not cut it...

I'd like to know how you don't realize your bills are missing for 3 months. YDI

he said OUTGOING mail. so he had already received his bills, and he tried mailing back the payments, but the grandma had went out to his mailbox and threw the payments away before the mail truck could send them. so, there is no way that OP deserves this

So you just figured places like the power company, your apartment rent and others didnt want to be paid cause you're "just so damn nice"? You got some calls to make and a padlock for the mailbox to get.

OUTGOING MAIL. OUTGOING. OP did attempt to pay them. They put the check in the mail. And then it got thrown out.

God...where to start?! Ok, first...who the hell pays bills by mail anymore? Hello...21st century! Second...unless you're sending cash by mail, in which case you are a total moron, how did you not notice the money not being deducted from your bank account? Finally...over the course of three months how did you fail to notice that your payments weren't getting applied to your bills? You totally deserve this one!

I still pay by mail. It's easier for me personally. I guess I'm a little old fashioned. But I always pay my bills on time, you are right that by the 3rd month OP should know something's up if bills haven't been coming or paid for a while. By the second month I would be questioning where my mail is if I didn't get my bills so I could pay them. I wouldn't wait until the 3rd month to try to figure out why nothing is coming.

Not to be rude, but how did you not notice the money was still sitting in your bank account?
